Geophysical Engineering
The Geophysical Engineering Department has exchange programs with Curtin University of Technology, Perth, Australia. The benefits to the geophysical engineering program and Montana Tech are multi fold. Curtin University of Technology in an institution with a focus similar to that of Montana Tech, thus making it a natural choice for collaboration. The absence of a language barrier enables two-way working relationships to be established with comparative ease. Curtain University has a number of existing programs with direct counter parts at Montana Tech (e.g. geophysics, mining, petroleum engineering, applied physics/material science). A close relationship has already been established with the Exploration Geophysics program at Curtin.
The geophysics programs at Curtin and Montana Tech both have similar focus. Both programs have a tradition of emphasizing geophysical exploration for natural resources. Curtin has the advantage of being located in an industrial climate more favorable to exploration, which has helped the geophysics department in terms of industrial support for research and scholarships as well as enhanced visibility for student recruiting. In addition, Curtin has initiated numerous government sponsored research projects that provide opportunities for both faculty and students.
