Geological Engineering

The Department of Geological Engineering is currently engaged in active research in three main areas:

bullet hydrogeology
bullet environmental geochemistry
bullet geotechnical engineering

The Department is primarily interested in establishing contacts with institutions in Latin America (including Mexico, Central and South America).  The economy of these countries is heavily dependent on extractive industries, which overlap with our own expertise in these areas. These areas are geographically closer than other regions of the globe and have the advantage that a single language (Spanish) is spoken in most countries.

Latin America has tremendous geologic diversity but has been understudied in terms of engineering and scientific research, creating unlimited opportunities for new projects.  Because of their rapidly expanding population and economy, Latin American countries pose many challenges in the area of geological engineering.

Montana Tech has an exchange agreement with Universidad Nacional del Comahue, in Argentina.

Department Head: Dr. Diane Wolfgram
