Student Employment

How do I apply for Work Study?

You must submit a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and your eligibility for aid must be determined. You can indicate on your FAFSA that you are interested in the work-study program. If you didn't mark this on your application, you can mark it on your Student Data Form. If you didn't mark that you were interested in work-study on either form, you may still request work-study funds at the Financial Aid Office. Work Study is a limited fund.

Where do I find out about student jobs?

The first step in finding a job is to check the job board outside the Financial Aid Office, Mining Geology Building, Room 114 or the bulletin board at the College of Technology. Both work-study and regular student employment jobs are posted on these job boards. The notices describe job duties and qualifications required. Work-study positions are on blue paper and regular student positions are on white paper. For regular student employment positions a referral card is required. You must bring your social security card and your driver's license to the Financial Aid Office to complete the I-9 form. Then you will be given the referral card to be taken to the department that is advertising the position.

What do I do after I've been awarded work-study?

Once you have been awarded work-study and have accepted the award, you may review the job listings. To apply for the positions that are listed, you complete your blue card and take it to the contact person listed on the job posting. An interview will be set up at that point. If you are hired, then you need to come to the Financial Aid Office to complete the necessary paper work for the position. You must bring your social security card and your driver's license. This must be done before you begin working. All paper work must be returned to the Financial Aid Office. Time cards are then processed and sent to your supervisor or your employing department.

Planning your work schedule.

Once you are hired, you and your supervisor can plan your work schedule based on your class schedule and the number of hours you are able to work. You can not exceed 20 hours/week.

How much work-study can I receive?

The maximum amount awarded in work-study for the Academic Year is $2000.00, $1000.00 per semester. You may earn the entire award or you may not depending on the number of hours you are working.

When do I get paid and where do I pick up my check?

You will receive a paycheck once a month. The amount of your check will depend on your rate of pay and the number of hours you worked during that pay period. You may pick up your check at the Business Office. You also have the option of choosing direct deposit. If you are picking up your pay checks and a pay day falls on a holiday week or during a break, you may need to leave a self addressed stamped envelope with the Financial Aid Office and your pay check will be mailed to you.
