Scholarship Information
How do I apply for Scholarships?
Continuing students who have completed or will complete at least
one semester on the North Campus and are pursuing a Baccalaureate
Degree can complete the General Scholarship Application. This one
application is used for awarding Scholarship Committee Scholarships
and Departmental Scholarships. New students, transfer students,
and South Campus (COT) students can obtain an application from the
Admissions Office or click on the New Student Scholarship button
to the right.
When and where are the applications available?
The Scholarship Applications are available in January and are due
in the Financial Aid Office by 4:00 PM, March 1st of each year.
The only exception is if the 1st falls on a weekend. Then the due
date will be the following Monday.
Applications are available in the Document Rack outside the door
to the Financial Aid Office and from the Departments.
Do I have to apply for scholarships every year?
Yes. You must apply for scholarships every year to be considered
for Scholarship Committee Scholarships. Please don't forget to apply.
The application is simple and will only take a few minutes to complete.
Who awards the scholarships?
The Montana Tech Scholarship Committee awards scholarships. The
funds from these awards come from the Montana Tech Foundation (Endowed
and Annual Scholarships), the Montana Tech Alumni Association, and
College Endowed Scholarships. The Department Heads and faculty award
the Departmental Scholarships.
When will I be notified if I receive a scholarship?
Scholarship award letters are generally mailed the first week in
June. Letters are also mailed to those students who do not receive
scholarships but usually not until August. Department Scholarships
are sometimes awarded later and, therefore, you will receive notification
later.
Please make sure the Financial Aid Office has your correct summer
address in order to receive these notifications.
How do I receive my scholarship funds?
You must return your signed acceptance of the scholarship(s) along
with the copy of the 'thank you' letter(s) that you must write to
the donor or sponsor of the scholarship you received to the Financial
Aid Office. Half of the scholarship award will be applied to your
fall semester bill and the second half of the award will be applied
to your second semester bill provided you meet the minimum requirements
to receive your scholarship.
What if my bill is paid?
Any excess funds that are remaining after your Business Office
account has been paid will be released to you.
If I received a scholarship my first year at Tech, will I continue
to receive the same scholarship?
It depends. Most scholarships are awarded for only one academic
year. There are a few scholarships that are awarded for more than
one year. Please check with the Scholarship Officer in the Financial
Aid Office if you have a question about if the scholarship you received
is continuing. Please do not assume that it will continue.
How do scholarships affect my Financial Aid?
Scholarships must be treated as a resource available to the student
for paying for school. Sometimes a Financial Aid Package will need
to be adjusted if you receive a scholarship. You will receive a
Revised Award Notification Letter that will state what your new
eligibility is. A student can not receive more than the cost of
attendance.
Can I receive a scholarship if I graduate after fall semester?
Yes. Please indicate that you will be graduating in December on
your Scholarship Application and, if eligible, you would be awarded
a scholarship for the fall semester.
Can I use Summer Credits to meet minimum requirements for scholarships?
No. All scholarships require that the minimum requirements must
be meet during the fall and spring semesters. Summer credits do
not count.
If I take an internship, can I receive Scholarship(s)?
You can only receive scholarships for the semesters that you are
enrolled full-time (12 credits). Please indicate on your Scholarship
Application when you were or will be on an internship and the Scholarship
Committee will make awards, if eligible, on that information. If
you are on an internship for fall semester, will be a full-time
student spring semester, and are eligible, the Committee would award
you a scholarship for the spring semester. If you were awarded a
scholarship for the academic year and decided to take an internship
for spring semester, you would forfeit the spring semester portion
of your scholarship. In either case you would still be eligible
to apply and receive, depending on scholarship eligibility, scholarships
for the following year. In other words you are not penalized for
taking an internship. You just cannot receive scholarship funds
in the semester you are less than full-time.
Scholarship Committee Policy on Internships
Scholarships are awarded for one academic year. If a student takes
an internship during a semester (and is, therefore, not a full-time
student), that student is not eligible to receive a scholarship
that semester nor will that scholarship be transferred to the next
semester. The student is eligible to apply for scholarships for
the next year.
Scholarship Committee Policy
Effective as of the 1996-97 academic year, the following policy
was adopted for award and maintenance of scholarships awarded by
the Montana Tech Scholarship Committee.
"To be eligible for consideration for scholarships awarded
by the Montana Tech Scholarship Committee a student must have passed
a minimum of 24 credits with a minimum grade point average of 2.75
during the previous academic year (not to include summer session).
Scholarships are to be awarded for the entire academic year. However,
in order to receive payment of the first one-half of the scholarship,
the recipient must register fall semester as a full-time student
(minimum of 12 credits) with the intent of passing 24 credits during
the entire academic year.
In order to receive the second half of the scholarship, the recipient
must have passed a minimum of 12 credits fall semester with a minimum
semester GPA of 2.00 and must register spring semester for a minimum
of 12 credits.
The above full-time basis (12 credit minimum) applies to all students
including graduating seniors who may not require 12 credits to meet
graduation requirements."
OUTSIDE SCHOLARSHIPS
I RECEIVED A SCHOLARSHIP FROM MY HIGH SCHOOL, LOCAL CLUB, ORGANIZATION,
ECT. WHAT SHOULD I DO NOW?
Please inform the Financial Aid Office as soon as you are notified
that you will be receiving a scholarship from a source other that
Montana Tech. It's better for us to know that funds may be coming
for you and, if you are receiving Financial Aid, it may change your
eligibility for some awards. If it does change your eligibility,
you will be notified with a Revised Award Notification Letter. Under
Federal Regulations, the Financial Aid Office cannot allow a student
to have more funds than the cost of attendance.
Are there other scholarships I can apply for other than the General
Scholarship Application?
Yes. All outside scholarships that are sent to the Financial Aid
Office are posted on the bulletin board across from the Financial
Aid Office. We are located in the Mining & Geology Building,
Room 111.
