Public Lecture Series: Bill Riggs

The Montana Tech Public Lecture Series presents Bill Riggs.

Bill Riggs will present, The History of Byproduct Molybdenite Flotation, October 26 at 4 p.m. in ELC 202.

Bill Riggs is a leading expert in froth flotation to improve recovery of valuable metal-bearing minerals. Among the highlights, he strengthened the market in flotation for modified fatty acids, fatty amines, and pine oil and developed a market for sodium hydrosulfide, ammonium sulfide, and liquid xanthates. He also participated in developing the only approach for alkaline leach-precipitation-flotation of copper oxides. As Director of Research at Inspiration Consolidated Copper Corporation he co-authored the patent on “Acid-Ferric Cure Leaching of Mixed Copper Sulfide-Oxide Ores,” which was put into commercial application in 1982 and is used today as a standard leaching treatment. Riggs then spent 21 years building OrePrep Chemicals, Inc. into a premier global specialty company that customizes frothing agents. After retirement in 2001, he formed Mentors International, Inc. to continue providing technical support, process optimization, and flotation training worldwide. In 2017 AIME/SME honored him with the James Douglas Gold Medal Award. Bill’s bachelor’s degree in Geology and Chemistry is from the University of Texas—El Paso.

All lectures are free and open to the public. View the complete Public Lecture Series schedule.
