Creating a test in Blackboard can save an instructor a considerable amount of time. Blackboard automatically grades (non-essay questions) and places the grades into the Gradebook. Students get immediate feedback on their test performance. Also, instructors can re-use questions for previous tests.
In regards to security, the test can be customized to distribute randomized questions and/or pull a specified random number of question from a pool.
Tests also have the option to be made visible or invisible to the students. Test links can be manually changed to be visible or not, or Blackboard has the option to automatically make tests visible during certain times and dates.
To Create A Test or Quiz
First, open your course and select the Control Panel from the tool bar on the left side of the screen. Under Assessment, Click on Test manager.
Next choose the add Test button. Type in the name, description, and instructions for the test. Click Submit.

 Note: This test will be stored until you make it available in a Content Area (ie. Assignments.) |
Choose the first type of question you want and click GO.
The computer will correct all of the questions except essay questions, which must be graded by the instructor. Options will vary depending on the type of question added.
After constructing the first question, click Submit. Repeat the above for the remaining questions.
Creation Settings lists additional options, such as adding an image, allowing feedback to be displayed, or setting the default point value for questions.
Once you have added all of the questions you want on the test, click OK. This will take you back into the Control Panel.
Deploying the Test
To make the test available, choose the desired folder, under Content Areas (ie Assignments.) This is where students will find the test.
Next choose the Test button and click the test you recently created. Click Submit.
You will recieve a message indicating the test was added successfully. Click OK.
Modify the Test Option:
This will allow you to set:
- Make the test visible to students
- Allow multiple attempts
- Set time or date limit
- Set password
- Allow backtracking
- Randomize questions
Test Availability (Visible to Students)
Allows you to change whether or not the link is visible to students. You may also display the test during certain time periods, using the display after, display until options. The date, and the time to display the test can be modified.
Adding question from a Pool
Also in the Control Panel, under Assessment, you can choose the Pool Manger. The pool manager allows you to create questions that will be on many exams or quizzes. Create tests in the Pool Manager the same as above. You can access these questions while making your exam by selecting From Question Pool under the question type drop down menu. Then select the questions you want to add. |
