Diagnostic Medical
Sonography
Advanced Certificate of Completion Program
AY 2008-09
The diagnostic ultrasound profession is a
specialized area of diagnostic imaging.
This multi-specialty field is comprised of Diagnostic Medical
Sonographers (RDMS) who perform abdominal, small parts, pelvic, gynecologic,
and obstetric sonograms; Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographers (RDCS, RCS) who image
the heart; and Vascular Technologists (RVT, RVS) who specialize in examining
arteries and veins. Sonographers utilize high-frequency sound waves to produce
diagnostic images of internal anatomy and assist the physician in gathering
information necessary to diagnose a variety of conditions and diseases.
Diagnostic Medical Sonographers must be highly
motivated, possess good judgment, and be able to work independently.
MT Tech’s 16 month program involves intensive
clinical education augmented by online didactic coursework. Students will need
access to a computer, an internet service provider, and will need documented
proof of computer competency for acceptance into the program. Upon completion
of the program, students will be able to perform abdominal, pelvic, small
parts, gynecological, and obstetrical sonograms, and have introductory
knowledge of neonatal neurosonography, extremity vascular, and carotid duplex
exams. The program qualifies graduates
to sit for the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS)
Abdominal, Obstetrics & Gynecology, and Physics credentialing exams, which
are necessary to obtain RDMS credentials. Graduates are qualified to sit for
the Sonography credentialing exam offered by the American Registry of
Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
Acceptance into this program requires students to
be either a registered Radiologic Technologist in good standing with ARRT or a
sonographer holding a RVT, RVS, RDCS, or RCS credential. Except for ARDMS
credentialed sonographers, sonographers and radiographers without degrees must
have completed a 2-year allied health program as part of their training. RT applicants may be completing the final
semester of their RT degree at the time of application, but admission into the
Sonography certificate program will be contingent upon successfully passing the
ARRT boards by August 15th of the year accepted.
A limited number of students are admitted fall semester of every
other year. If the number of qualified
applicants exceeds the available space, not all qualified applicants will be
accepted. Preference will be given to
applicants with one letter of recommendation, employees in facilities with
approved clinical sites, and graduates of the Montana Tech College of
Technology Radiology program.
