to Dr. Rossi (Club Advisor of the Year), Dr. Poole (Longevity
Award for 35 years of service), and Dr. Haley (Part-time
Professor of the Year) for the awards that they recieved!
Our department is lucky to have such outstanding professors,
and these awards are all very well-deserved!

- October 2004, Chip
Todd and Jim Handley present at the MEA/MFT Teacher's Conference
in Helena, MT. Math majors Michele Johnson and Kelsey Jensen,
under the direction of Ginger Toivonen, also presented lessons
at the conference.

- October 2004, Dr. Chip
Todd and Dr. Suzan Gazioglu present talks at the Montana
Chapter of ASA 2004 Fall Meeting at MT Tech.The title of
Dr. Todd's talk was "An introdution to Probabilty Appropriate
for High School Students," and Dr. Gazioglu spoke about
"The Application of Sensitivity Analysis To Compartmental
Models."

- Homecoming 2004, The
Math Club places third in the bed races and hosts a tailgate
party before the football game on Saturday.

- October 2004, Reno
Alston was the recipient of the 2004 Depatment of Mathematical
Sciences Alumni Recognition Award. Reno graduated with a
B.S. in Math from Montana Tech in 1997. After graduating
from Montana Tech, Reno has taught math at the high school
and community level. Reno also coached high school basketball
in Louisiana and was an assistant coach on the 2003-4 National
Junior College Basketball Championship team at Redlands
Community College in El Reno, Oklahoma.

- May 2004, Dr. Susan
Gazioglu is hired to replace Dr. Dennis Haley. Dr. Gazioglu
graduated with a B.Sci, in Mathematics (1990) and a M.Sci.
in Applied Mathematics (1992) from Yuzuncu Yil University
in Turkey. She earned another M.Sci. in Applied Mathematical
Statisitics from the University of Toledo in 1996 and her
Ph.D. in Statistics from the University of Glasgow in the
UK in 2002. For the pass two years Dr. Gazioglu worked at
the University of Gaziosmanpasa in Turkey.

- May 2004, Dr. Dennis
Haley retires after 35 years of service at MT Tech. Dennis
will continue to teach one-third time each spring for the
Department of Mathematical Sciences.

- May 2004, Dr. Dennis
Haley awarded Professor Emeritus for his outstanding contribution
to Montana Tech over his 35 year career.

- May 2004, Susan Leland
was granted tenure. Congratulations Susan!

- May 2004,
former Mathematics graduate Chelesa Carter completed her
master's degree in Statistics from Oregon State University.

Mathimatics major Steve Walsh is the top mathematics graduate.
Steve is heading to Montana State University to work on
his masters in mathematics.

Sue Walker is named as one of the "Best of the Best
College Teachers" in The Montana Standard's 2004
Reader's Choice Awards.

- March 2004, The
Department of Mathematical Sciences team consisting of Steve
Walsh(Sr.), Theron Wilson (Sr.), and Michelle Johnson (Jr.)
finished 2nd (Meritorious) in the 2004 COMAP Interdisciplinary
Contest in Modeling. The team's advisor was Dr. Rick Rossi.

Dr. Craig Calcatera was the recipeint of the 2002 Department
of Mathematical Sciences Alumni Recoginition Award.
Dr. Craig
Calcatera graduated with a B.S. in Math from Montana Tech
in 1994 and earned his Ph.D in Math from the University
of Hawaii.

papers at the MEA meeting in Billings, MT

After nearly 20 years as an Adjunct Instructor of Mathematics,
Sue Walker was hired as a tenurable Instructor of Mathematical
Science. Welcome Sue!.

Dr. Chip Todd was granted tenure. Congratulations Chip!

Mathematics major Johnna Anderson is the valedictorian for
the College of Mathematics and Science. Johnna is heading
to Purdue to work on her Ph.D. in Statistics.

Ginger Toivonen, Bob Toivonen, and Susan Leland win the
Rose and Anna Busch Awards Facilty Achievement Award. Past
winners from the department include Ginger Toivonen (2000),
Susan Leland (2000), Rick Rossi(2001), Dennis Haley (2002),
and Susan Walker (2002).

Dr. Rick Rossi gave an invited talk to the Department of
Statistics at Oregon State University
|
- January 2003, The
department has hired Nicole Burns as the new administrative
associate to replace Donna Huntoon.

Our good friend and colleague Dave Hill passes away.

- Calley Jones, Math Major,
wins Goldwater Award.

- 1999, Dr.
Richard J. Rossi, Head of the Department of Mathematical
Sciences, has been promoted from Associate Professor to
Full Professor. Dr. Rossi came to Montana Tech in 1994 from
Cal Poly. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1996
and granted Tenure in 1997. Dr. Rossi was elected Head of
Mathematics to replace Dennis Haley.
