Data Communication Systems & Networks
3 Cr. (Hrs.:3Lec.)

Studies data communication at the hardware level.  Covers network management and the recent technology of distributed environments.  Includes hands-on experience in programming and creating a network environment. Prerequisite: I.T. 1426 or C.S. 2106 or C.S. 2126. (1st)

Expectations:

E1.  Students have knowledge of at least one computer operating system. (C.S. 2106, C.S. 2126)

E2.  Students have had some programming experience. (C.S. 2106, C.S. 2126)

E3.  Students are able to solve conceptual problems. (C.S. 2106, C.S. 2126)

Course Outcomes:

R1.  Students will understand what business information systems entail.

R2.  Students will know the networking fundamentals.

R3.  Students know the terminology and concepts of the OSI 5-layer model and can reason about the layers.

R4.  Students know the vocabulary of and can set up a Local Area Network.

R5.  Students know the vocabulary and concepts of Backbone Networks.

R6.  Students know the vocabulary and concepts of Metropolitan and Wide Area Networks.

R7.  Students understand how t he Internet operates, how URLs are gotten, and have an idea of what a future of the Internet might be like.

R8.  Students will be able to make good network design decisions. Network Design.

R9.  Students will know the vocabulary and concepts of network management  and network security.
