Curriculum

The Department of Chemistry & Geochemistry of Montana Tech of The University of Montana offers several degrees and options:

B.S. Degree in Chemistry - The Department of Chemistry and Geochemistry offers a B.S. degree in Chemistry and a M.S. degree in Geochemistry. The undergraduate degree is certified by the American Chemical Society and a stuydent who fulfills the requirements described under the Professional Option will be certified by ACS. The undergraduate curriculum allows sufficient electives for students to tailor their program to match career objectives.

Several areas of specialization are available at the undergraduate level. Each is designed to enhance knowledge in the special area while maintaining a strong chemical orientation. Areas of specialization include, Biochemistry, Environmental Chemistry (ACS certified), Geology-Geochemistry, and Professional (ACS certified). Internships opportunities are also available for students who wich to incorporate practical work experience with their academic studies.

B.S. Degree in Chemistry (Biochemistry Option) - This option is for students interested in pursuing careers in research and/or professional practice in biomedicine and health care, including careers in biotechnology, medicine, medical technology, pharmacy, dentistry, etc. Several transfer articulations have been developed for this option.

B.S. Degree in Chemistry (Professional Option) - This option is certified by the American Chemical Society. Students completing this degree are recognized globally as having completed a rigorous curriculum, that includes advanced courses in inorganic chemistry, theoretical chemistry, biochemistry, and undergraduate research.

B.S. Degree in Chemistry (Environmental Chemistry Option) - This option, which is certified by the American Chemical Society, is for students who also desire a strong background in the environmental sciences. Students pursuing this curriculum will take focused coursework in biology, environmental engineering, and Geology.

B.S. Degree in Chemistry (Geology - Geochemistry Option) - This option is for students who also desire a strong background in the geology and/or who wish to pursue careers in geochemistry at the interface between geology and geochemistry . Students pursuing this curriculum will take additional focused coursework in geology.

Pre-Professional Health - Students may prepare for entry into professional schools of law and health (including medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, optometry, podiatry, etc.) by completing a Bachelor's degree at Montana Tech, provided the necessary prerequisite courses are included. Students may also attend Montana Tech for one or two years to prepare for transfer to other institutions to complete undergraduate professional or liberal arts degrees. In all cases, students are urged to work closely with the appropriate advisor at Montana Tech, to consult catalogs, and whenever possible, advisors at the institution to which they plan to transfer. Students should realize that transfer information is subject to change as a result of action by other institutions.

Teaching Certification (Montana Secondary Licensure) - Students interested in teaching mathematical, biological, or broad field science at the high school or junior high level can obtain Montana certification to teach in these areas. This program is offered in conjunction with The University of Montana - Western. Students pursuing this program must complete a Montana Tech B.S. degree in Mathematical Sciences, Biological Sciences, or General Sciences and selected pre-education coursework at Montana Tech. These students then apply for admission to the The University of Montana - Western Teacher Education Program. Successful completion of the latter program prepares the student to receive Montana Secondary Licensure in mathematical, biological, or broad field science.

M.S. Degree in Geoscience (Geochemistry Option) - Geochemistry is an interdisciplinary field of study in which the science of chemistry is used to solve earth science problems. Areas of study include the full spectrum of topics from the determination of the thermodynamic properties or minerals, to the determination of the migration of pollutant species within a soil or hydrologic environment and the geobotanical / biogeochemical search for ore deposits. The geochemistry option is centered in the Chemistry and Geochemistry Department, Students acquire relatively strong backgrounds in chemistry and can choose thesis topics ranging among a large variety of geochemical / environmental topics.

Admission requirements: B.S. in chemistry, geology, or any area of science or engineering.

Prerequisite geology and chemistry courses: A reasonable number of courses in chemistry and geology.

Option: Thesis, Publishable Paper, or Non-Thesis

Seminar Requirements: ENGR 5150 Graduate Writing Seminar or equivalent; GSCI 5940 Geoscience Seminar.

Minor in Chemistry - This minor requires that the student complete 19 to 22 credits of chemistry courses that span the major inorganic, organic, analytical, and physical sub-disciplines of chemistry. For many Montana Tech students completing the Chemistry Minor only requires taking one or two extra courses.
