Current Research Activities and Interests

Climate Change Biology

Conifer Needle Structure as an Indicator of Climate Change
This new project involves measurements of cellular dimensions and tissue allometry in conifer needles as possible indicators of climate change.  I am currently seeking students for participation in this research.

GLORIA Site
Installation of a GLORIA (Global Research Initiative in Alpine Environments) site in Southwestern Montana as part of an international monitoring network of alpine plants and climate change, (with Tyler Pullman and the GLORIA network).  http://www.gloria.ac.at/

Tree Physiology

Redwood Needle Functional Anatomy Along a Functional Gradient
Fluorescent microscopy with image analysis of cellular dimensions and tissue allometry of redwood needle structure along a gradient from the lowest to the highest foliage in very tall coastal redwood trees.  Results of this work are part of a much larger project with George Koch, Steve Sillett, Greg Jennings, and others in which we are exploring the questions of water transport and limits to tree height.

Mycorrhizae of Mountain Plants

Mycorrhizal Symbioses at and Above Treeline in the Andes Mountains of Patagonian Argentina
Beginning in March, 2006, we began collecting Andean plants at and above treeline to determine whether they form mycorrhizal symbioses and to characterize the types of mycorrhizal symbioses present, (with Sonia Fontenla, Natalia Fernandez, and Celia Ezcurra of El Universidad del Comahue in Bariloche, Patagonia, Argentina).
