Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are the degree requirements?

There are two "tracks" within the Biological Sciences department, each leading to a Bachelor of Science degree. Information on the Cellular/Molecular Track and the Organismal Track can be found in the Curriculum section.

2. What are the career options with a biological sciences degree?

The Biological Sciences degree prepares students for a wide array of career opportunities including environmental, pharmaceutical and biotechnology research, conservation and wildlife management. In addition, those seeking to enter graduate school or professional schools such as medical, dental, veterinary or pharmacy are well served by their exposure to the biological sciences that make up the core of the degree program.

3. Are there opportunities for research?

Yes! There are many opportunities for research throughout the department. Our faculty are actively researching important aspects of ecology, microbiology, bioremediation, genomics, genetic engineering and infectious diseases and are assisted by several undergraduate and graduate researchers working in their labs (check out the Research area for information about individual labs) . The best way to get involved is to visit with our faculty and discuss how you can assist with an existing exploration or develop a new independent project. There are also opportunities to get paid for your efforts through the Undergraduate Research Program.

4. What do the Seminar classes cover?

The seminar classes are designed to give the student an overview of current topics in subject areas related to their course work during their Freshman, Sophomore, Junior and Senior years. This is a critical element in understanding how the learning that happens in the classrooms and labs applies to real-world research and problem solving.
