INTRODUCTION:
Welcome to General Chemistry Lab II
- Chem 1166. This course includes a
one-hour lecture on Tuesday, Section 01 (11-11:50 am) or Thursday, Section 02
(11-11:50 am) and a two-hour laboratory (Sections 11-12 & 14 -16). Students must be registered for both a Laboratory
Lecture Section and a Laboratory Section.
The pre-requisites for this laboratory class are Chemistry 1056 and
Chemistry 1136, and the co-requisite is Chemistry 1066.
LECTURE ATTENDANCE:
Attendance
in the lecture is required. The lecture
consists of demonstrations, sample calculations and discussions of the
laboratory procedure. This is an
opportunity for students to ask questions prior to performing the
experiment. There will be a 10.0
point quiz given at the end of each lecture section. There
are no make-up quizzes; however, the lowest quiz score will be dropped at the
end of the semester.
LABORATORY ATTENDANCE:
Students
are required to attend the laboratory section for which they are
registered. Each experiment must be
completed during the week for which it is assigned. The lowest laboratory grade will be dropped
at the end of the semester. If for
reasons beyond your control, you are going to be absent from your assigned
laboratory section, please give the Course Instructor at least 24 hours
notice. You will not be allowed to
attend another laboratory section with prior consent. If you miss a laboratory with out prior
consent, this will be the one laboratory grade you will be allowed to drop.
COURSE OUTLINE:
This
course is divided into two different segments.
The first half of the semester will deal with qualitative analysis of
cations and anions in solutions and solids.
This is generally descriptive chemistry and will involve little math or
quantitative work.
The second
half of the semester will have several experiments pertaining to various topics
or aspects of chemistry and will complement the Chem1066 lecture course. These experiments are designed to help you
better understand the theory discussed in your lecture class.
This
manual has been prepared at Montana Tech and is intended for use by students in
laboratory classes in chemistry. If you
have comments, corrections or concerns with the information in this manual,
your feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Please direct such comments to the instructor personally or in writing.
Safety will be stressed in all
aspects of laboratory work. As with Chem
1136, you are required to sign and turn in a statement indicating that you
understand all the safety rules of this school.
