Ternary Phase Diagram
In this experiment you will construct a ternary phase diagram for the acetic acid - chloroform - water system at 25.0 °C and barometric pressure. An analysis of tie lines that you experimentally determine in the two phase region will allow you to locate the plait point. The theoretical background, materials and chemicals, experimental procedure, data, calculations, and references for this experiment are all described in detail in the MS Word document Ternary Liquid Phase Diagram.
Safety
The reagents used in this lab acetic acid and chloroform are all toxic and should be handled with care, being careful not to leave residue from these materials on your skin, to ingest these materials, or to breath their vapors. All of these materials should be properly disposed of at the end of the experiment.
