Ethylenediamine Complexes of Nickel (II)
This experiment will utilize the colorful visible spectra of the aqueous ethylenediamine complexes of Ni2+ to develop a method for obtaining the concentrations of these four complexes.
Ni2+ (aq) Ni(en)2+ (aq) Ni(en)22+ (aq) Ni(en)32+ (aq)
in a given aqueous solution of Ni2+ and ethylenediamine. The theoretical background, materials and chemicals, experimental procedure, data, calculations, and references for this experiment are all described in detail in the MS Word document Ni (II) Ethylenediamine Complexes.
Safety
The reagents used in this lab solid NiSO46H2O and liquid ethylenediamine are all toxic and should be handled with care, being careful not to leave residue from these materials on your skin, to ingest these materials, or to breath their vapors. All of these materials should be properly disposed of at the end of the experiment.
