Metals Abstracts


Metals Abstracts was published as Metallurgical Abstracts from 1934 to 1939 and as the Institute of Metals Journal from 1940 to 1967. In its present incarnation Metals Abstracts was formed from the merger in 1965 of the Metallurgical Abstracts with the Review of Metal Literature and has been published as Metals Abstracts since 1967 by The Institute of Metals (London) and the American Society for Metals.

Subject, Author, and Corporate Author Indices are provided for each volume. For example, under the Subject Index heading, Abrasion resistance, Coating effects, we find:

The full abstract number 90-05 58-0502 indicates that this abstract appeared in the May 1990 issue of Metals Abstracts under the annual abstract number 58-0502, where the 58 refers to the Metallic Coating subject section of Metals Abstracts and the 0502 is a unique number within this subject section for this year. A key to journal title abbreviations is also provided.

Montana Tech has paper copies of 148 volumes of Metals Abstracts extending back to 1934. Electronic searching of Metals Abstracts, Metals Abstract Index, and Alloy Index back to 1966 is available by searching METADEX, the on-line version of Metals Abstracts.
