How To Apply


To be admissible to Montana Tech, you must fulfill the following requirements:

  1. Apply for admission
  2. Submit $30 application fee
  3. Prepare a Statement of Financial Support:
    • This statement must be an original statement from your bank or sponsor and must certify that funding will be available to cover the estimated expenses during your first year at Montana Tech. All international students applying for admission must show at least the amount specified on the international student estimated expense form. Currently, that amount is $31,178 USD for undergraduate international students.
  4. Supply a copy of your passport
    • Montana Tech needs this so that we can ensure that the spelling we use on any official documents exactly matches the spelling on your passport.
  5. Provide education credentials
    • If you will be a first year student coming to Montana Tech right out of secondary school (grade 12) and have never attended a college or university, you must submit an official copy of your high school transcripts, converted into English. You must have a 2.5 cumulative gpa, based on a 4.0 scale to be admissible.
    • If you will be a first year student and are applying to start directing into an academic program at Montana Tech then you must register to take the SAT exam. Students must send official test scores to Montana Tech and you must achieve at least a 560 on the math portion of the SAT and achieve a 1540 composite score. You will not be considered for any scholarships or placed into classes until we have received the official score report. Register for the SAT and take a practice exam.
    • If you will be a transfer student and have taken college-level classes, either in your home country or elsewhere, you must submit official transcripts from all colleges and universities that you have attended. All transcripts must be official and converted into English. You must have a 2.0 cumulative transfer gpa based on a 4.0 scale to be admissible.
  6. Satisfy the English Proficiency Requirements.
    • All international students from countries other than Australia, Canada, England, Ireland, New Zealand, Scotland or Wales must prove English proficiency by providing one of the following qualifications. No exceptions will be made to this list of countries.
      • Official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score report showing a minimum score of 71 on the internet-based test. Please obtain information concerning this test from
      • Official score reports from the International English Language Testing System showing a minimum score of 6. Please obtain information concerning this test from
      • Certification of Successful Completion from the ELS Language Centers Level 109. Please obtain more information regarding this program from
      • Certification of grade of "C" or higher on the English Language section of one of the General Certificate of Education, Ordinary Level (GCE-O) examinations administered in England.
      • Students who have graduated from an accredited high school in the United States may satisfy this requirement by providing an official high school transcript, along with two letters of recommendation from high school faculty/administrators regarding proficiency in English.
      • Students transferring to Montana Tech after one (or more) years of full-time enrollment, totaling at least 24semester-level credits at an accredited United States college or university may satisfy this requirements by providing official transcripts and at least two letters of recommendation from faculty members regarding proficiency in English.
      • If you do not have any of the aforementioned requirements, you may indicate that you will attend the English Language Institute (ELI) in Missoula, Montana and obtain the necessary qualification at that institution. Montana Tech will conditionally admit you based on this intent, but you must then satisfy the aforementioned qualifications before we will allow you to enroll at Montana Tech. To do this, you must apply for Montana Tech and the English Language Institute and satisfy requirements at both institutions.
  7. Submit immunization records.
    • All international students must have a physician or registered nurse validated record showing the dates of immunization for:
      • Measles, Mumps and Rubella (two doses after your first birthday)
      • Tetanus
      • Diphtheria
      • And a recent skin test (within the past year) for tuberculosis (TB)
  8. Medical Health Insurance.
    • All international students must have health insurance. Students will be automatically enrolled in Montana Tech’s health insurance, but they are encouraged to look into alternative traveler’s insurance options.
