English Proficiency Requirements

International applicants are required to demonstrate English proficiency for admission to Montana Tech. Citizens of countries other than Australia, Canada, England, Ireland, New Zealand, Scotland, and Wales can prove their English proficiency through any of the following methods:

  1. Official TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign language) score report showing a minimum score of 71 Internet based, 525 paper-based, or 195 computer-based. Please obtain information concerning this test at www.ets.org/toefl.
  2. Official IELTS score report showing a minimum score of 6. Please obtain all information concerning this test at www.ielts.org.
  3. Certification of successful completion of ELS Language Centers level 112. Please obtain all information concerning ELS from: ELS Language Centers, Executive Offices, 57961 Buckingham Parkway, Culver City, CA 90230, U.S.A or www.els.edu/en.
  4. Certification of grade “C” or higher on the English Language section of one of the General Certificate of Education, Ordinary Level (GCE-O), examinations administered in England.
  5. Official Cambridge IGCSE scores with five passes of grade C and above.
  6. Students who have graduated from an accredited high school in the U.S. may satisfy the Proof of English Language Proficiency requirement by providing an official high school transcript along with two letters of recommendation from high school faculty/administrators regarding proficiency in English language skills.
  7. Students transferring to Montana Tech after one (or more) year of full-time enrollment at a college/university in the United States may satisfy this requirement if they have successfully completed at least 24 semester credits and have also passed with a grade of “C” or better, an English Composition course determined to be equivalent to Montana Tech’s Writing 101 College Writing course.
