Occupational Safety & Health (OSH) degrees offer many exciting career opportunities as safety and health professionals or as health and fitness professionals. Our graduates manage health and safety risks in a work environment through the development of safe work policies or pursue graduate work in industrial hygiene, safety, or health-related areas such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, or cardiac rehabilitation. The OSH professional may work wherever health or safety hazards or concerns exist.

The Montana Tech B.S. in Occupational Safety & Health is the only established program of its kind in a five-state region (North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Idaho and Montana) and is the only U.S. program offered by an institution specializing in minerals and energy engineering.

The Montana Tech OSH program is interdisciplinary and gives students a background in the sciences and pertinent engineering areas. Emphasis is placed on hands-on work in the laboratory and/or relating the subject matter to real world situations. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health recognizes the OSH program through annual training grants providing scholarships for students majoring in OSH and Industrial Hygiene. Opportunities also exist for internship appointments in government and industry.

The SHIH Department has four degree programs:

The department's two graduate programs are accredited by the Applied Science Accreditation Commission of ABET,

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recognizes the quality of the ABET-accredited programs through a Training Project Grant. The grant funds are used for scholarships, travel, and faculty development. Students eligible for these funds are those pursuing the B.S. in Occupational Safety and Health and the M.S. in Industrial Hygiene.
