This statue was sculpted by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, an Irish-born American artist. He was commissioned to do the work in May of 1902. Saint-Gaudens died one month and a day before the statue was unveiled on September 2, 1907. This statue was one of Saint-Gaudens last artistic productions.
The Daly statue was originally locatednear the intersection of north Main and east Gagnon Street. The statue, which now greets all campus visitors, was moved to its current location in 1941. A traffic accident involving the statue persuaded Daly’s widow and the city fathers to move the statue. The move was sponsored by the Butte Pioneer Club and the Butte Citizen’s Committee. Mrs. Daly paid the moving bill. However, when the statue arrived at the top of the hill on June 25, 1941 a suitable foundation was not finished, so the statue rested on the side of the road until the pedestal was completed. |
